Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, visited New Delhi for the Second Strategic and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue with India from November 4 to 5, 2024. The event was hosted by India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit K Doval KC. This dialogue is a significant step in enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries as they address threats from terrorism and international crime.

During the discussions, both National Security Advisors focused on challenges such as terrorism, extremism, and radicalization, especially those spreading through cyberspace, as well as arms and drug smuggling. They identified specific areas for cooperation to strengthen their joint efforts against terrorism, emphasizing that “there can be no justification for terrorism in any form or manifestation.” The dialogue also aimed to boost bilateral capacity building and cooperation on international platforms.

India and Nigeria share warm and deep-rooted bilateral relations as large developing democracies. With India’s population of 1.3 billion and Nigeria’s over 190 million, both countries have multi-religious, multi-ethnic, and multi-lingual societies, making them natural partners. Their historical struggles against colonialism and apartheid have laid a strong foundation for their engagement, evident in their roles in South-South Cooperation.

Over the past six decades, India has maintained strong political contacts with Nigeria, elevating their relationship to a “Strategic Partnership” during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Nigeria in October 2007. This partnership highlights their commitment to representing the developing world in multilateral organizations like the United Nations, G77, and NAM, working together towards security and prosperity.
