India and Mongolia’s ‘Nomadic Elephant’ Military Exercise Begins in Meghalaya

The 16th edition of the joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ between the armies of India and Mongolia will be held in Umroi, Meghalaya from July 3-16. This exercise aims to enhance the ability of both armies to work together in semi-conventional operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains.

The Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army) stated that the exercise is conducted annually, alternating between Mongolia and India. The 15th edition took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, with soldiers from the Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084 and the Indian Army’s Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment participating.

In May, the 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defense Ministries of India and Mongolia was held in Ulaanbaatar. The meeting, co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) Amitabh Prasad and Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj, reviewed ongoing defense cooperation and discussed ways to enhance it. India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, also attended the meeting.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current defense cooperation and discussed the potential for further collaboration. They also exchanged views on the current geopolitical situation, with Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad highlighting the capabilities of the Indian defense industry and the Mongolian side expressing confidence in these capabilities.
