New Delhi, India – The relationship between India and Malaysia has significantly improved since Anwar Ibrahim became Prime Minister in 2022. Over 15 high-level visits have taken place between the two nations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

First Visit to India

PM Anwar Ibrahim is on his first visit to India since taking office. This visit is important as it marks nearly 10 years of enhanced strategic partnership between the two countries, a milestone first announced during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia in 2015.

Close Rapport Between Leaders

MEA Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar highlighted the close personal connection between PM Modi and PM Ibrahim, which began during the Raisina Dialogue in 2019. This rapport was evident in their recent interactions and has paved the way for a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Extensive Discussions

The two leaders discussed various topics, including trade, commerce, defense, security, cultural exchanges, and emerging areas like digital technologies and renewable energy. The Indian diaspora in Malaysia, which is the third largest in the world, also featured in their talks.

Economic Ties

PM Modi noted that Malaysian investments in India reached over 5 billion dollars last year. Both leaders expressed their commitment to further deepening their partnership across multiple domains.

Agreements and MoUs

During the visit, India and Malaysia exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements to strengthen their bilateral relations. The discussions aimed to enhance cooperation in various fields, including sustainable development and semiconductors.
