India and Germany to Strengthen Ties in Technology and Defence, Says S Jaishankar
Berlin, Germany – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries with shared values and interests, particularly in defence and security. Speaking at the Annual Ambassadors’ Conference of the German Foreign Office in Berlin, Jaishankar highlighted India’s growing capabilities and the need for Germany to take a greater interest in the Indo-Pacific region, just as India is doing in the Euro-Atlantic.
Jaishankar noted that cooperation between India and Germany contributes to a better world in areas such as green and clean energy, sustainable urbanization, and new technologies. He stressed the importance of recognizing interdependence and the limitations of national capabilities, stating that instability anywhere affects everyone.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and the country’s ambassador to India, Dr Philipp Ackermann, were also present at the conference. Jaishankar discussed the significance of resilient supply chains and the need for trusted partners in the digital era. He mentioned that the upcoming 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations in India would be crucial for addressing key issues.
Jaishankar highlighted the potential for increased trade and investment between India and Germany, noting that the current trade stands at USD 33 billion. He also mentioned the importance of innovation and technology, particularly in areas like AI, fintech, and green technologies.
The minister spoke about the progress in defence cooperation and the need for updating export controls. He welcomed recent air exercises between India and Germany and anticipated ship visits to Goa. Jaishankar also mentioned the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership, which has resulted in 38 agreements worth 3.22 billion Euros.
Jaishankar pointed out that there are 43,000 Indian students in Germany, and the number has doubled over the last five years. He emphasized the need for continuous consultation on global issues to build trust and confidence in the partnership.
He concluded by highlighting India’s significant economic growth and infrastructure development over the past decade. Jaishankar mentioned India’s achievements in digital technologies, healthcare, and the startup ecosystem, as well as its contributions to the global semiconductor industry and space missions.
