India and Bangladesh to Renew Ganges Water Treaty and Manage Teesta River
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra announced that a joint technical committee will begin discussions to renew the Ganges water sharing treaty of 1996. Additionally, India will assist Bangladesh in the conservation and management of the Teesta River.
During a special press briefing, Kwatra emphasized the importance of managing common rivers for both countries. The Teesta River, which often floods during the monsoon and faces water shortages in the dry season, will be a focus of these efforts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on a state visit to India, agreed to intensify cooperation on counterterrorism and border management. They also discussed enhancing bilateral and sub-regional cooperation.
In a joint address, PM Modi highlighted the start of technical talks for the Ganges treaty renewal and the review of Teesta River management. He also mentioned future collaborations in green and digital partnerships, blue economy, and space, which will benefit the youth of both countries.
The Bharat-Bangladesh Maitri Satellite will further strengthen the relationship between the two nations. PM Modi noted that restored connectivity since 1965 will now focus more on digital and energy connectivity to boost both economies.
