India and Bangladesh Discuss Rohingya Issue During PM Hasina’s Visit

India and Bangladesh have been discussing the Rohingya issue at various levels, according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. India has provided humanitarian assistance to Rohingyas in the past and continues to work closely with Bangladesh on this matter.

Kwatra mentioned that the Rohingya issue was a key topic during the discussions. He noted that Bangladesh faces several challenges related to the Rohingyas, some of which also affect India. These challenges were part of the discussions between the two leaders.

India had previously opened its borders to over 10 million Bangladeshi people fleeing brutality by Pakistani military forces in the early 1970s, despite not being a signatory to any international convention. The New Delhi government helped these refugees settle and provided financial assistance.

The discussions took place during Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina’s two-day state visit to India from June 21 to 22. This visit marks the first foreign guest on a bilateral state visit to India after the formation of the Modi 3.0 government.
