India and Africa to Work Closely Together, Says External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

New Delhi, India – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of India and Africa working closely together during the Africa Day celebrations in New Delhi. He highlighted India’s commitment to a mutually beneficial and respectful relationship with Africa, referring to the spirit of ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ or global brotherhood.

Support for Africa in Global Forums

Jaishankar expressed India’s support for a greater role for Africa in the United Nations and other multilateral forums. He invited African countries to join the International Big Cat Alliance and praised their participation in the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuel Alliance, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Defence and Peacekeeping Cooperation

The minister noted the strong defence relations between India and Africa, mentioning the training of military officers and the establishment of Defence Academies in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. India has also deployed training teams in several African countries and is the third-largest contributor to UN Peace-Keeping Operations, with nearly 5000 personnel serving in Africa.

G20 Presidency and Global South

During India’s G20 presidency, the country focused on the aspirations of the Global South, including Africa. Jaishankar highlighted the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent G20 member as a source of pride for India.

Technological and Space Cooperation

Jaishankar spoke about India’s belief in the transformative power of technology and its positive impact on Africa. He also mentioned the exciting opportunities for cooperation in space programs between India and Africa.

Future Collaborations

Looking ahead, Jaishankar expressed his anticipation for the fourth India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV) and reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to prioritizing Africa and its people.

Jaishankar concluded by assuring that Africa will remain a top priority for India, aiming for a relationship based on mutual benefit and respect.
