Imran Khan’s PTI Protests Cause Major Damage in Islamabad

In Islamabad, Pakistan, protests organized by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have caused significant damage to both public and private property, amounting to PKR 240 million. The Islamabad Inspector General’s office reported these findings to the chief commissioner after the violent protests over the weekend.

Reasons Behind the Protests

PTI initiated these protests to advocate for the “independence of the judiciary” amidst proposed constitutional amendments by the current government led by Shehbaz Sharif. Another key reason is the demand for the release of PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail for over a year.

Extent of the Damage

The protests resulted in the destruction of 441 safe city cameras worth PKR 140 million, damage to 10 police vehicles, 31 motorcycles, 51 gas masks, and three private vehicles. A crane was also damaged. Tragically, one policeman lost his life, and 31 others were injured.

Economic Impact

The Finance Minister, Muhammad Aurangzeb, stated that the Economic Advisory Wing assessed the economic losses due to halted activities, estimating a loss of PKR 190 billion.

Government’s Response

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged to control the protests, ensuring that PTI does not repeat its 2014 sit-in tactics. The protests have severely disrupted life in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with the cities being sealed off to prevent further escalation.
