Imran Khan’s PTI Calls for Nationwide Protests in Pakistan
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf (PTI), has announced a series of nationwide protests starting in Islamabad. The protests aim to ensure the independence of the judiciary.
This announcement came a day after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur threatened the central government and other institutions with severe consequences if action against PTI workers was not stopped.
The protests are scheduled to begin in Islamabad tomorrow, despite a new law banning public gatherings in the city. PTI also plans to hold protests in other key cities like Mianwali, Faisalabad, and Bahawalpur on October 2, followed by a demonstration at Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore on October 5.
Under the new ‘Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill 2024’, any party wishing to organize protests must appoint an event coordinator who will seek permission from the district magistrate at least seven days before the event. The district magistrate will then review the law and order situation and obtain security clearance from law enforcement agencies before granting permission.
The new law also allows the central government to designate specific areas of Islamabad as ‘red zones’ or ‘high-security zones’, prohibiting all types of assemblies in those areas.
In response to the judicial changes, Imran Khan stated, “We will defend the judiciary and will continue a struggle for real freedom.”
