Imran Khan to Stay in Jail, Pakistan Faces Economic Challenges: BMI Report

Business Monitor International (BMI) has reported that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is unlikely to be released from jail soon, despite several legal appeals. The report, quoted by Dawn News, states that opposition leader Imran Khan will remain imprisoned for the foreseeable future.

The report predicts that the current government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, will remain in power for the next 18 months as it works to implement fiscal reforms mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). BMI expects the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government to succeed in pushing through these reforms.

However, the BMI analysis highlights significant challenges for Pakistan’s economy, describing it as extremely fragile and vulnerable to external shocks. The report notes that 40% of Pakistanis work in agriculture, making the economy susceptible to risks from floods or droughts. Additionally, the country’s fragile political situation could hinder economic recovery.

The report also mentions the possibility of the Pakistan government banning Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, which could lead to another series of protests. BMI warns that such a scenario would be disastrous for Pakistan, potentially disrupting economic activity in urban areas.

Lastly, the BMI report indicates that Pakistani policymakers are likely to miss their ambitious budget targets, although they may manage to narrow the deficit.
