Imran Khan Banned from Meetings in Adiala Jail

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, is currently facing a ban on meetings with family, lawyers, and party leaders until October 18. This restriction, imposed by the Punjab government, applies to all prisoners in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Khan is held.

Security Concerns

The ban is due to security concerns, especially with the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad from October 15 to 16. The jail has heightened security after incidents involving explosives were reported earlier this year.

Previous Incidents

In March, a similar ban was enforced for two weeks. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) had previously found a hand grenade and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the jail. In November 2023, an explosive device was discovered near Adiala Road.

Security Measures

Pakistan’s security agencies have expanded investigations, arresting six jail staff members for allegedly aiding Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The Punjab government has issued directives for additional security measures, following a threat alert from the CTD on October 6.

To ensure safety during the SCO summit, Pakistan is deploying troops with constitutional approval from October 15 to 17, as part of a comprehensive security plan.
