Heavy Rains Cause Disruptions in Mumbai and Pune

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon in Maharashtra is expected to withdraw by October 5 this year. Several areas, especially Mumbai and Pune, experienced severe waterlogging after heavy rains on Wednesday night.

Rainfall Statistics

Sunil Kamble, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, stated that Mumbai received almost 2900 millimetres of rainfall this monsoon season, which is 600 mm above the normal average. Normally, Mumbai records 2300 mm of rain during the monsoon season.

Weather Alerts

Kamble mentioned that a red alert was issued for Mumbai as the monsoon intensified, leading to over 200 mm of rain in some areas. An orange alert has now been issued for Mumbai and several other districts, with green and yellow alerts expected from tomorrow. A red alert remains in place for Palghar due to the possibility of 150mm-200mm of rain.

Impact on Daily Life

Kolaba, Santacruz, and Chembur received the most rainfall on Wednesday, with Kolaba and Santacruz recording 170 mm and Chembur 200 mm. The heavy rains caused severe waterlogging, affecting train, bus, and flight services in Mumbai and Pune. Services were restored on Thursday morning as the water receded.

School and College Closures

The city administration declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai following the IMD forecast. Pune district administration also declared a holiday for schools and colleges due to the heavy rainfall prediction.
