IMD Predicts Depression to Affect Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Oman

Weather Update: Depression in Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a low-pressure area over the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, which has intensified into a depression. As of 5:30 PM on October 15, 2024, this depression was centered about 490 kilometers east-southeast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is expected to move west-northwestwards, crossing the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, near Chennai, by the early morning of October 17.

Additionally, a depression over the west-central Arabian Sea, off the Oman coast, has moved northwestwards. It was centered 180 kilometers southeast of Duqm, Oman, at 5:30 PM on the same day. This depression is likely to move northwestwards and cross the Oman coast near Duqm during the early hours of October 16.

These developments coincide with the onset of the northeast monsoon rainfall activity over southeast peninsular India.
