ICMR and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Join Forces for Solar Energy in Healthcare

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has partnered with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) to promote sustainable energy in India’s healthcare and research sectors. This collaboration aims to harness solar power for ICMR institutes nationwide, supporting India’s renewable energy goals.

Solar Power Initiative

Under the agreement, NVVN will supply, install, test, commission, and maintain rooftop solar panels at 15 ICMR institutes, with a total capacity of 4,559 KW. This project includes a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for grid-connected solar projects, offering a fixed solar tariff for 25 years, ensuring cost efficiency and sustainability.

Impact and Benefits

Seven institutes are already using solar power from previous projects. The new MoU will extend solarization to more facilities, reducing ICMR’s carbon footprint and energy costs. This partnership advances India’s renewable energy goals and positions ICMR as a leader in green energy within the biomedical field.

Doubts Revealed

ICMR -: ICMR stands for the Indian Council of Medical Research. It is a government body in India that conducts and supports medical research to improve public health.

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam -: NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) is a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, which is India’s largest energy conglomerate. NVVN focuses on trading electricity and promoting renewable energy projects.

MoU -: MoU stands for Memorandum of Understanding. It is an agreement between two or more parties, in this case, ICMR and NVVN, to work together on a specific project or goal.

Solar panels -: Solar panels are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. They are used to generate renewable energy, which is clean and sustainable.

Power Purchase Agreement -: A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contract between two parties, one who generates electricity (NVVN) and one who wants to buy it (ICMR). It ensures a long-term supply of electricity at agreed prices.

Carbon footprint -: A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, that are emitted by an organization or activity. Reducing it helps combat climate change.

Renewable energy goals -: Renewable energy goals are targets set by a country to increase the use of energy sources that are sustainable, like solar or wind power, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
