ICC May Move Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh Due to Protests

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering relocating this year’s women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh because of ongoing anti-government protests. The protests, primarily led by students, have escalated, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Alternative venues such as the UAE, Sri Lanka, and India are being considered. The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and security agencies. An ICC official stated, “Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants.”

Travel advisories have been issued by the governments of Australia, England, and India, urging their citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh. The tournament is scheduled to take place from October 3 to 20, 2023.

While India and Sri Lanka are capable of hosting the tournament, there are potential challenges. In Sri Lanka, rain could disrupt the event in October, and in India, obtaining visas for Pakistani players might be problematic.

The last time the ICC moved a global tournament was in 2021 when the men’s T20 World Cup was shifted from India to the UAE and Oman due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
