IBSA Ministers Push for More Countries in UN Security Council

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar of India, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, and South Africa’s Minister Ronald Lamola met during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. They discussed expanding the UN Security Council to include more developing countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Attended a productive IBSA Foreign Minister’s meeting today alongside FM Mauro Vieira and FM @RonaldLamola. IBSA nations participate in and shape ongoing global discourses on development, SDGs, poverty eradication, multilateralism, and South-South cooperation. We share convergent views on reforms of UN system and of its Security Council. Our consultations should intensify as these debates acquire greater urgency.”

The ministers expressed concern about the conflict in Ukraine and called for de-escalation and dialogue. They also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. They emphasized the need for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

The ministers agreed to strengthen the IBSA Fund, which supports projects in developing countries, and highlighted the importance of fighting poverty and hunger. They welcomed the pre-launch of the Global Alliance against hunger and poverty, an initiative of the Brazilian presidency of the G20.

They stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for resolving conflicts and called for upholding international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. They affirmed the need for reformed multilateralism to address global challenges and make global governance more representative and effective.
