IBM to Cut 1,000 Jobs in China Amid US-China Tensions

IBM, a major tech company, is planning to reduce its business operations in China. This decision comes as tensions between the US and China rise and the Chinese economy declines. IBM will cut 1,000 jobs in China and end its research operations there after 25 years. The work will be moved to other research labs, possibly in India.

IBM stated that these changes will not affect its ability to support clients in the Greater China region. This move follows similar actions by other tech companies like Microsoft, which also relocated some employees recently.

David Hoffman, a senior advisor from Conference Board Asia, mentioned that market access for Western firms in China is becoming more restricted due to national security concerns. IBM’s revenue in China fell by 19.6% last year, indicating that China is no longer as promising for its industries as it once was.
