Hyderabad, known as the City of Pearls, is set to host the Intercontinental Cup 2024 final between India and Syria on September 9. The historic Gachibowli Stadium has been renovated with an investment of approximately Rs 16 crores, restoring its past glory.

In February 2024, All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey met with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss Indian football and Hyderabad’s legacy. Chaubey expressed his excitement about the new infrastructure and the state’s enthusiasm for hosting its first international football event in 16 years.

Chaubey said, “It gives me confidence in our partnership with the State and a push to explore how we can make Hyderabad a permanent home to not just international football events, but also to develop it as a gateway for talent grooming.”

Over the past two years, AIFF has been forming partnerships with various Indian states to promote inclusive football growth. Telangana is the latest to join, following Uttar Pradesh’s announcement of a massive infrastructure plan for 827 fields and 18 mini stadiums.

Historically, Hyderabad has a rich football legacy, with notable players like SK Azizuddin, Syed Nayeemuddin, and Shabbir Ali. The city is now ready to reclaim its place in Indian football.
