Hindu Community Faces Challenges for Durga Puja in Bangladesh

The Hindu community in Bangladesh is preparing to celebrate Durga Puja from October 9 to 13. However, in some areas like Uttara, Dhaka, they are facing difficulties due to obstructions by radical groups.

Obstructions in Uttara

In Uttara, a suburb of Dhaka, radical Islamist groups have formed human chains to prevent the festival. Last year, the festival was held in Sector 11, but this year, worshippers and students from nearby mosques and madrasas have opposed it. Community Police officer Siraj Mia mentioned that the mosque committee will not allow the Puja in Sector 13 either.

Intervention by Authorities

The army and police intervened to mediate between the Hindu and Muslim communities, but the venue had to be changed. The National Human Rights Commission has taken note of the situation and condemned the vandalism of a Durga idol in Gouripur, Mymensigh.

Legal Actions and Investigations

The Commission has called for legal action against those involved in the vandalism and has formed a committee to investigate the incident. The committee, led by Md Ashraful Alam, will submit a report within 10 working days.
