Hindu American Groups Raise Awareness on Bangladesh Hindu Genocide
On October 4, Hindu American groups took a bold step to draw global attention to the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh by flying a massive banner over New York City. The banner, which circled the Statue of Liberty, called for urgent action to stop the ongoing genocide of Hindus in Bangladesh.
The 1971 Genocide
The 1971 genocide in Bangladesh, recognized by the US Congress in 2022, resulted in the deaths of 2.8 million people and the rape of at least 200,000 predominantly Hindu women. Since then, the Hindu population in Bangladesh has decreased from 20% in 1971 to just 8.9% today.
Current Threats
Recent reports indicate targeted violence, kidnappings, and forced job resignations affecting up to 200,000 Hindus. Since August 2024, there have been around 250 verified attacks and over 1,000 reported incidents against Hindus.

Sitangshu Guha, from the Bangladesh Hindu Community, emphasized the existential threat to Hindus in Bangladesh, urging global awareness and UN intervention. Pankaj Mehta, from the Interfaith Human Rights Coalition, called for the UN to recognize the 1971 genocide officially.

Surjit Chowdhary, from Sree Gita Sangha, urged the Bangladesh government to address violence through democratic means. Activists are also calling for a boycott of Bangladeshi garments until the violence stops.
