Himalayan Tattoo Summit in Nepal: Blending Tradition with Modern Art
The Himalayan Tattoo Summit 0.1 in Lalitpur, Nepal, is a unique event where traditional values meet modern designs. Supported by the National Academy of Fine Arts and Nepal Handicraft Association, the summit features over four dozen artists creating tattoos that fuse images of gods with contemporary elements.
The designs include Ganesh, Living Goddess Kumari, Buddha, Hanuman, and other comical and religious characters. Tattoo artist Sujit Rai, also known as Jitsu Rai, shared that people now come with researched ideas, making the process more enjoyable for artists.
Tattoo culture in Nepal is an ancient tradition practiced by the Newa, Tharu, Gurung, and Magar communities. While traditional tattoos were linked to spiritual beliefs and community identity, modern designs focus more on aesthetics. Brijesh Shrestha, a member of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of showcasing Nepali culture through tattooing and inviting international artists to learn about Nepal’s tattoo traditions. Nepal has become a popular and affordable destination for tattoos, with many Nepalese artists gaining international recognition for their creativity.
