Himachal Pradesh Sees Record High Temperatures in September 2024
In September 2024, several places in Himachal Pradesh experienced very high temperatures. Shimla recorded its second-highest temperature in 10 years at 28.4°C on September 23 and 24. The highest was 28.6°C on September 30, 1994. Manali saw its second-highest temperature of 27.7°C on September 23, with the highest being 28.4°C on September 14, 2023. Bhunter set a new record with 35.5°C on September 24, while Kangra also recorded an all-time high of 35.0°C on September 23 and 24. Una reached its highest temperature of 38.6°C on September 24, matching a previous record from September 21, 2020. Dharamshala recorded its highest temperature in 10 years at 32.0°C on September 24. Sundernagar saw its all-time highest temperature of 35.1°C on September 23.
Despite these high temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects a drop in temperatures by 2-3°C due to increased rainfall. Rain is expected to start from late Wednesday night and continue until September 27, with light to moderate showers across the state. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the IMD Himachal Pradesh, explained that the lack of rainfall and minimal cloud cover over the past four days led to the temperature spike. A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms and lightning in areas like Solan, Sharma, and Shimla. Around 5-6 cm of rainfall is expected in Sharma district around September 26.
Himachal Pradesh’s total monsoon rainfall from June stands at -21%, and the monsoon is considered normal if the total rainfall falls within plus or minus 19%. There will be no monsoon withdrawal until at least September 27, though the deficit may reduce.
