Himachal Pradesh Doctors Join National Strike for Justice and Safety

On August 17, the Himachal Pradesh Medical Doctors Association (HMOA) joined a national protest to demand justice for a rape and murder victim in West Bengal. The protest was organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to call for better safety and security for doctors.

Support for the Strike

Dr. Vikas Thakur, General Secretary of HMOA, announced the association’s support for the IMA’s day-long token protest. He emphasized the need for a non-bailable offence act with a minimum imprisonment term for any abuse against doctors. Dr. Thakur also highlighted the challenging working conditions faced by doctors in Himachal Pradesh, including long working hours and staff shortages.

Demands for Safety and Security

Dr. Thakur urged the state government to implement the Doctor’s Protection Act. He noted that despite previous assurances from the Chief Minister, no progress has been made on the promotion of posts or other demands. He also mentioned that doctors’ voices are being suppressed under the state government’s health secretary.

Background of the Protest

The protest was triggered by the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. This incident led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community.
