On October 16, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the new Block-C building of Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV) in Shimla, constructed at a cost of Rs 9 crore. The Chief Minister emphasized the state government’s commitment to equipping schools and colleges with qualified teachers and essential facilities.

Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony

Following the inauguration, CM Sukhu presided over the Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony for 2023-24, honoring students excelling in various fields. A cultural program was presented by the students, for which the Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the college.

Significant Announcements

During the event, CM Sukhu announced the conversion of all classrooms into smart classrooms, the construction of a new hostel, and a Rs 50 lakh provision for a digital library and science block repairs. He highlighted the need for educational reforms, noting Himachal Pradesh’s 21st rank in education quality.

Government Initiatives

The state government is establishing Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding Schools to enhance rural education and has increased the marriageable age for girls to 21. Amendments to the Himachal Pradesh Land Holding Ceiling Act now allow adult daughters to claim ancestral property. A 30% reservation for women in police recruitment has also been introduced.

CM Sukhu praised RKMV College’s history and its distinguished alumni, including Vijaya Thakur and Tilotama Verma. The government supports vulnerable groups, adopting 4,000 orphaned children and providing free education to 23,000 children of widowed mothers. The Dr YS Parmar Vidyarthi Rin Yojana offers loans to underprivileged students at low interest rates.

Combating Drug Addiction

The government is establishing a State-Level Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Center in Sirmaur District and a Center of Excellence in Solan District for differently-abled students.

Principal Anurita Saxena welcomed the Chief Minister and presented the college’s annual report. Several dignitaries, including MLA Harish Janartha and Mayor Surinder Chauhan, attended the event.
