Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Sukhu Inaugurates Nicholas Roerich Art Exhibition in Shimla

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – On Sunday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu inaugurated the ‘Master’s Universe’ art exhibition at the Gaiety Theatre in Shimla. This event marks the 150th birth anniversary of the famous Russian artist Nicholas Roerich.

The 25-day exhibition, open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm until September 25, is free to the public. It showcases the art and cultural heritage of Nicholas Roerich, featuring over 100 photographs and banners about his life and work.

The event is organized by the International Center of the Roerichs (Moscow) and the International Roerich Memorial Trust (Naggar, Kullu, HP), in collaboration with the Language Art and Culture Department of Himachal Pradesh.

Exhibition Highlights

Larisa Surgina, curator of the International Roerich Memorial Trust, emphasized that the exhibition symbolizes the friendship between India and Russia. She said, ‘This exhibition tells about his life and creative work. It was specially prepared by the International Center of Roerichs in Moscow for India.’

Pankaj Lalit, Director of the Himachal Pradesh Language, Art, and Culture Department, highlighted Roerich’s message of peace, which remains relevant today. He noted that Roerich spent nearly 20 years in Himachal Pradesh and created around 8,000 paintings.

Alexander V Stetsenko, Vice President of the International Center of the Roerichs, mentioned that Roerich believed the future connection between India and Russia lies in their cultural heritage.

Chief Minister’s Remarks

Chief Minister Sukhu reaffirmed the strong friendship between India and Russia, promising full support from the state government to strengthen the Roerich Trust. He said, ‘Nicholas Roerich came to India before independence and returned in 1928, settling in Himachal Pradesh. He nurtured an unbreakable bond with Indian culture and Hindu traditions.’

A young visitor praised Roerich’s work, stating that it offers valuable lessons for the youth. ‘This exhibition showcases how Nicholas Roerich integrated Indian culture into his art, reflecting Indian civilization,’ he said.
