Sharma explained that in urban areas, 30% of water supply bills are standardly charged as sewerage fees. A notification issued on September 21 proposed a Rs 25 charge per toilet seat for commercial establishments, but it was withdrawn the same day after objections from the Deputy Chief Minister, who is also the Minister of Water Power.
Clarification on Water and Sewerage Policies
The government spends Rs 700 to Rs 800 crore on energy charges for water supply. Sewerage charges are part of water supply connections, with a flat rate of Rs 100 per connection. Some commercial units were using independent water connections with government sewerage, leading to the proposed charge, which was revoked.
Sharma emphasized that reports of a tax based on toilet seats are misleading. The department aims for 100% sewerage connectivity for better pollution control and sewage treatment. The public is urged not to spread false information about these charges.
