Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 27: The West Bengal police have increased security around the state secretariat, Nabanna, in response to the Nabanna Abhijan Rally planned for Tuesday. This rally is a protest against the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Security Measures

The police have deployed vajra vehicles, water cannons, and the Riot Control Force in the area. Containers have been placed to block roads to prevent the rally from reaching Nabanna. The West Bengal Police have declared the rally illegal, stating it aims to incite unrest in Kolkata.

Traffic Advisory

The Kolkata Police have issued a traffic advisory with several route diversions. Vehicles from Kolaghat and Dankuni intending to use the 2nd Hooghly Bridge are advised to use Nibedita Setu. Howrah-bound vehicles from Kolkata and vice versa are also directed to use Nibedita Setu. Restrictions are in place on several routes, including Kona Expressway, Andul Road, GT Road, and others.

Police Statement

Additional Commissioner of Police Kolkata, Supratim Sarkar, stated that the application by Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj to hold the rally was rejected due to lack of formal permission and insufficient details. The group had announced the rally on social media and the press without following the mandatory High Court directives.

The rally is in response to the brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and numerous protests demanding justice for the victim.
