Hezbollah Launches Rockets at Israel After Senior Hamas Commander’s Death
Days after Israel confirmed the death of a senior Hamas commander, around 30 rockets were launched from Lebanon towards northern Israel. The attack was claimed by Lebanon-based Hezbollah, targeting a military base.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that several rockets landed in open areas with no casualties. In response, the IDF struck the area from where the rockets were fired.
Following the attack, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the deployment of a guided missile submarine to the Middle East amid escalating tensions. Austin informed Israel Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that two ships and one submarine were being sent to help defend Israel, reiterating the US’s commitment to Israel’s defense. The Abraham Lincoln strike group was also ordered to accelerate its deployment to the region.
During a call, Gallant informed Austin that Iranian military preparations indicated Iran was preparing for a significant attack against Israel.
Israel confirmed last week the death of senior Hamas commander Nael Sakhl, who was killed in an airstrike on July 24. Tensions have escalated further after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the death of Ismail Haniyeh in an attack in Tehran. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.
