Ambala, Haryana experienced heavy rains on Sunday, leading to significant waterlogging and disruption of daily life. Haryana Minister Aseem Goyal reported that the city received over 220 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, which is five times more than what the city can typically handle.

Minister Goyal stated, “In the last 24 hours it has rained more than 220 mm. Any city can withstand up to 50 mm of rainfall in 24 hours but the rainfall has been 5 times more. There is a trend of cloud bursting. Certainly, there has been waterlogging in many places due to heavy rains. Our departments are trying to handle the situation.”

He also mentioned that tenders for some relief projects would be opened soon. “I have spoken to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and he has instructed senior officials to visit the spot, they are coming in the morning. We are going to prepare a design so that such a problem does not occur in the future, the government is serious about this,” he added.

Minister Goyal noted that some of the Municipal Corporation’s pumps were damaged but assured that 48 pumps are now operational. “There have been shortcomings on the part of the Municipal Corporation and it would be corrected,” he said.

Commuters were seen wading through water-logged roads as heavy rainfall hit several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted thunderstorms and lightning with moderate rain over parts of Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, and Panchkula. IMD Chandigarh posted on X, “Thunderstorm/Lightning with Moderate Rain very likely over parts of Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Panchkula.”

The IMD Regional Centre in New Delhi also predicted moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning across several parts of Haryana, including Rajaund, Assandh, Jind, Gohana, Rohtak, Jhajjar, and Farukhnagar, as well as parts of Rajasthan like Kotputli, Alwar, and Viratnagar.
