Heavy Rains Cause Trouble in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
Shimla, a city in Himachal Pradesh, experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday, which disrupted normal life and caused waterlogging in many areas. Commuters had to wade through water-logged roads.
Babu, a local resident, said: “Today’s heavy rainfall has choked drains and caused waterlogging. There is a looming threat of trees being uprooted. While last year saw significant damage, Shimla has fortunately been spared so far this year. However, the persistent rainfall is instilling fear among the locals. People are struggling to cross the roads and are facing immense difficulties in commuting.”
On August 7, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant rainfall across the state. Joginder Nagar in Mandi district experienced the highest rainfall at 110 mm in 24 hours.
Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, said: “We have recorded the highest rainfall at Joginder Nagar in Mandi district at 110 mm during the past 24 hours. It is heavy rainfall, and in Sirmaur district, we have received heavy rainfall. In other parts of the state, there has been moderate rainfall. Nearly 75 per cent of areas have received between 30 mm to 50 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.”
The continuous downpour has made daily life challenging for both residents and visitors. Previous cloudbursts and flash floods on August 1 had already affected the districts of Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla.
