Heavy Rains Cause Flooding and Disruptions in Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting very heavy rain in the next 24 hours. On Monday morning, Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall, resulting in traffic jams and waterlogging.

Rainfall Data

IMD Director Sunil Kamble reported that around 270 mm of rainfall was recorded between 2 am and 6 am. An orange alert has been issued for the next 24 hours, and a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for the following day.

Impact on Transportation

Ram Karan Yadav, General Manager of Central Railway, stated that more than 300 mm of rain fell in six hours, causing significant waterlogging, especially around Kurla Bhandup and Chunabhatti. Train services have been disrupted, with some trains canceled and others diverted. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also affected.

Other Disruptions

Schools were closed, and exams scheduled for the day were canceled. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that Colaba recorded 83.8 mm of rainfall, and Santacruz recorded 267.9 mm in the last 24 hours. Mumbai received a total of 2547 mm of rainfall, which is 27 percent of the average annual rain during the same period. Waterlogging was reported in several areas, including Worli, Buntara Bhavan, Kurla East, King’s Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station.
