Heavy Rains Cause Flight Cancellations and School Closures in Mumbai
On July 8, 2024, heavy rains in Mumbai led to significant disruptions. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport had to cancel 50 flights and divert several others. Runway operations were temporarily suspended from 02:22 hrs to 03:40 hrs. Airport personnel were deployed to assist passengers, providing additional seating and water.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for various regions, predicting heavy rainfall until July 12. Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall on Monday morning, causing traffic jams and waterlogging. The Kalu River in Thane and the Kundalika River in Raigad neared their danger marks.
The Central Railways suspended train services on the main line between CSMT and Thane due to waterlogging, while the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advised residents to stay indoors and provided a helpline number 1916 for assistance. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation declared a holiday for all schools on July 9.
