Heavy rainfall in Nepal has led to severe flooding and landslides, resulting in at least 60 deaths. The government has deployed over 20,000 security personnel for rescue operations.

Impact on Kathmandu Valley

The Kathmandu Valley, which includes Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur, recorded 34 deaths in a single day due to waterlogging and landslides. SSP Binod Ghimire from Kathmandu Valley Police Office confirmed the numbers, with 11 deaths in Kathmandu, 18 in Lalitpur, and 5 in Bhaktapur.

Rescue Operations

Security agencies, including the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force (APF), and Nepal Police, have rescued 1,415 people from various locations. They used zip-line and long-line rescue techniques to bring stranded people to safety. Jitendra Mandal, a rescued worker from Lalitpur, shared his harrowing experience of being trapped by the overflowing Nakkhu River.

Provincial Impact

Bagmati Province reported 19 deaths, while Koshi Province recorded 7 deaths in the past 24 hours. Koshi province CM Hikmat Kumar Karki visited the Koshi barrage to review the rising water levels.

Warnings and Precautions

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued warnings for 56 out of 77 districts, advising people to exercise caution. Floods, landslides, and erosion have caused damage in 44 districts, blocking roads in 39 of them.
