Heavy Rainfall Alert in Odisha: IMD Issues Red Alert for Puri and Other Districts
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha due to the intensification of a depression into a deep depression.
Current Situation
Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, stated that the deep depression is located over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, about 50 km east-southeast of Puri. It is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri within the next three hours.
Districts Affected
The districts of Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Boudh, Balangir, and Puri, including Malkangiri, are expected to experience extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. An orange alert has also been issued for several other districts.
Rainfall Data
Malkangiri district recorded the highest rainfall of 253 mm in the last 24 hours. Landslides and flood-like situations may occur in the hilly areas of Malkangiri.
Warnings and Advisories
Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea areas until September 11. A local cautionary signal number 3 has been issued for maritime ports.
Seasonal Rainfall
The seasonal cumulative rainfall from June 1 to September 9 is 908.6 mm, compared to the normal value of 1001.1 mm. One district recorded large excess rainfall, 17 districts recorded normal rainfall, and 12 districts were in the deficient category.
Future Forecast
The IMD has forecast rain for many districts of Odisha for the next three days. The depression is likely to move northwards towards the north Odisha-West Bengal coasts and intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. It is expected to cross Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Puri and Digha by noon on September 9 and continue moving west-northwestwards across Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and north Chhattisgarh over the subsequent two days.
