Heavy Rain in Mumbai Disrupts Flights and Shuts Down Schools

On Monday morning, heavy rainfall in Mumbai caused significant disruptions. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) had to suspend runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am due to low visibility, leading to 27 flight diversions to cities like Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore. Priority is currently being given to arrivals, causing delays in departures.

Schools were closed, and exams scheduled for the day were cancelled. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that Colaba recorded 83.8 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 267.9 mm in the last 24 hours. Mumbai city received a total of 2547 mm of rainfall, which is 27% of the average annual rain during the same period.

The BMC also reported a house collapse in the eastern suburbs and 39 complaints of falling branches, but no injuries were reported. A small landslide occurred at 7:06 am in the Vikroli Park site area, and work is ongoing to remove the debris. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani is monitoring the situation from the disaster control room, with all Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and other systems active at various locations.

Waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services were reported in low-lying areas such as Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King’s Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station.
