Heavy Rain in Mumbai Disrupts SpiceJet Flights, IMD Issues Red Alert

Amid heavy rain in Mumbai, SpiceJet announced on Wednesday that flight departures, arrivals, and their consequential flights might be affected. The airline stated, “Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected.”

Meanwhile, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport reported seven go-arounds and two flight diversions until 20:09 hours.

Earlier today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning for heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Maharashtra, until September 26, 8:30 am. The IMD forecasted thunderstorms with lightning and intense spells of rain, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, likely to occur in isolated places in Mumbai, Palghar, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Solapur, and Satara districts during the next few hours.

The IMD also issued a red alert for Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, and for Ratnagiri district on September 26. In its daily weather bulletin, the IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, East Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Marathwada, Coastal Karnataka, and Bihar. Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over Rayalaseema, Gujarat Region, Chhattisgarh, West Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Maharashtra, Interior Karnataka, and Telangana.

On Tuesday, the IMD predicted light to moderate rain at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal areas from September 26 to September 30. Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely to prevail over these areas tomorrow. The IMD also predicted moderate rain with lightning in North Tamil Nadu over the next seven days, with temperatures likely to soar 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal. Due to humid air and high temperatures, hot and discomforting weather is expected in isolated pockets over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
