Heavy Rain in Delhi: Woman and Child Drown in Ghazipur, House Collapses in Sabzi Mandi

A woman named Tanuja (22) and her child Priyansh (3) tragically drowned in a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area of East Delhi following heavy rainfall. They were residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony, Ghaziabad, and were on their way to the weekly Budh Bazaar when the incident occurred.

According to the police, a call was received on Wednesday evening at about 8:12 pm regarding the drowning. The police immediately reached the spot and found that Tanuja and Priyansh had fallen into a semi-constructed drain that was about 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide. The bodies were recovered, and further legal action is being taken by the Ghazipur East Delhi Police Station.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a house collapsed in Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi area amid heavy downpours. Five fire tenders were rushed to the site, but their arrival was delayed due to traffic congestion. The incident occurred at 8:57 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, cautioned all officers to remain alert due to the ongoing heavy rainfall. He advised them to ensure minimum inconvenience to the public and to address issues at waterlogging-prone sites, including coaching centers.

The heavy rain provided relief from the humid weather but caused traffic congestion throughout the city. Delhi witnessed 10 flight diversions between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Severe waterlogging was reported near AIIMS, and traffic jams occurred in the ITO area. The IMD has warned of slippery roads, low visibility, traffic disruptions, and localized waterlogging in low-lying areas. Intermittent showers are expected in Delhi until August 5.
