Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Chennai

Weather Warnings and Government Response
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall on October 17 and 18. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin are actively monitoring the situation. MK Stalin visited rain-affected areas and interacted with relief workers, while Udhayanidhi Stalin reported that Chennai received an average of 5 cm of rain in the last 24 hours, with Sholinganallur and Teynampet recording the highest rainfall of 6 cm.
Relief Measures and Public Safety
There have been no power cuts, but tree falls were reported in eight areas, which are being cleared. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have deployed 26 teams in Chennai and coastal areas. Two subways are flooded, and traffic is closed there. Water stagnation is being addressed with pumping efforts in 300 locations. Special health camps have been set up in 1,000 locations across Tamil Nadu, with 100 in Chennai.
Precautionary Measures
Schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts were closed on Tuesday. Residents in Velachery parked their cars on a flyover to avoid damage. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. IT employees in affected districts are encouraged to work from home from October 15 to 18.
