Heavy Rain Causes Flooding and Traffic Jams in Mumbai
Mumbai, a city in Maharashtra, India, experienced heavy rainfall on the night between Saturday and Sunday. This led to severe waterlogging in many parts of the city, including the Andheri Subway and areas near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
The heavy rain also caused major traffic jams on the Western Express Highway. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Nowcast warning for more intense rain in the districts of Raigad and Thane for the next 3 to 4 hours on Sunday.
IMD Mumbai stated, “Intense spells of rain are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Raigad and Thane during the next 3-4 hours.”
Earlier, Mumbai’s civic authorities advised residents to stay indoors unless necessary, as the IMD issued an orange alert predicting heavy to very heavy rain. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said, “The IMD has issued an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain) for Mumbai. People are requested to avoid going out unless necessary.”
An orange alert was also issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. Rainfall on Saturday morning caused waterlogging and traffic issues in several areas of Mumbai, which has been experiencing heavy rains over the past few days.
According to the IMD, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Mumbai are expected to be around 29 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.
