Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Delhi: Waterlogging, Airport Roof Collapse, and More

Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Delhi

On June 28, heavy rain in Delhi brought much-needed relief from a prolonged heat wave but caused significant disruptions. The rain led to waterlogging in various parts of the city, affecting traffic and daily life.

Waterlogging and Traffic Issues

People had to wade through waterlogged streets, and BJP Councillor Ravinder Singh Negi protested by rowing an inflatable apparatus on NH9. The Safdarjung observatory recorded 228mm of rainfall, marking the second-highest 24-hour rainfall in June ever recorded.

Airport Roof Collapse

At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, a portion of the roof at Terminal 1 collapsed, resulting in one death and eight injuries. The incident occurred around 5:30 am, damaging four vehicles. Departures from Terminal 1 were suspended, and flights were canceled until 2 pm.

Metro and Traffic Disruptions

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed entry/exit at Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 Metro station, and shuttle services from Delhi Aerocity to Terminal 1 were suspended. The Delhi Traffic Police reported traffic disruptions on Ring Road due to waterlogging under the Dhaula Kuan Flyover.

Protests and Political Reactions

BJP Councillor Ravinder Singh Negi criticized the Delhi Government for not cleaning drains ahead of the monsoon, leading to waterlogging. Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav was seen being helped to his car in the waterlogged Lodi Estate area.
