On Tuesday morning, Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogged roads. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted very heavy rain for the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre announced that a low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into Cyclone ‘Dana’ by October 23, potentially causing heavy rain in many Tamil Nadu districts.

Other states like Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalseema, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Gangetic West Bengal are also expected to receive heavy rain. Earlier, on October 19, Chennai faced heavy rain, disrupting daily life and services. On October 17, Chennai recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with areas like Kathivakkam and Manali receiving 23 cm and 21 cm of rain, respectively. Cholavaram, Red Hills, and Avadi recorded 30 cm, 28 cm, and 25 cm of rainfall.

The depression over the Bay of Bengal moved at 14 km per hour, crossing the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts near Puducherry and Nellore on October 17. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited rain-affected areas in Chennai’s Kolathur Assembly Constituency, distributing relief materials. He assured that the Tamil Nadu Government is prepared for any situation, with precautionary measures in place across the state.
