Heavy Monsoon Rains in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cause 88 Deaths and Widespread Damage

Since July 1, heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have resulted in the deaths of at least 88 people, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The fatalities include 43 children, 26 men, and 19 women. Additionally, 129 people have been injured, including 61 children, 39 men, and 29 women.

The rains have caused significant damage to 958 houses, with 260 houses destroyed and 698 partially damaged. A tragic landslide in the Upper Dir district claimed the lives of 12 family members, including nine children, in the Maidan area.

Tourist activities have been disrupted, with dozens of visitors stranded in Kumrat Valley. Shahid Ali, the Assistant Commissioner, informed that tourists have been confined to their hotel rooms for three days, and efforts are underway to evacuate them safely. Around 50-70 tourists have been directed to move to Jaaz Banda, and rehabilitation work on the Dir-Kumrat highway has started.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts continued heavy rainfall and windstorms across the country, potentially causing more landslides in areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, and Buner.
