Heated Exchange at JPC Meeting: TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Suspended After Glass Bottle Incident
In New Delhi, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill turned intense when TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee reportedly smashed a glass bottle during a dispute with BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay. DMK Deputy General Secretary A Raja described the incident as unpleasant and emphasized the confidentiality of the meeting’s proceedings.
Raja expressed concerns on social media about the manner in which the meetings were conducted, suggesting that the chairman’s actions raised doubts about securing justice. He criticized the chairman for holding a press conference and disclosing confidential proceedings.
As a result of the incident, Banerjee was suspended for one day under rule 347 by a 9-7 vote, barring him from attending the next meeting. The altercation began when Banerjee, who had already spoken multiple times, attempted to speak again, leading to objections from BJP MP Abhijit. The exchange escalated, with both reportedly using abusive language.
Banerjee then picked up a glass bottle, smashed it on the table, injuring himself, and threw the broken bottle towards the chairman. The meeting was temporarily adjourned, and Banerjee received medical attention, requiring four stitches.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeks to implement reforms such as digitizing records, enforcing stricter audits, enhancing transparency, and establishing legal measures to reclaim illegally occupied waqf properties.
