Heated Exchange at JPC Meeting

TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee and BJP’s Abhijit Ganguly Clash

In New Delhi, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Bill turned intense when Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Ganguly had a heated argument. Banerjee, who had already spoken multiple times, wanted to speak again, but Ganguly objected. This led to a verbal altercation, during which Banerjee smashed a glass bottle, injuring himself, and threw it towards the chairman. The meeting was paused, and Banerjee received medical attention, requiring four stitches.

The meeting included discussions with representatives from Justice in Reality and Panchasakha Prachar, as well as a delegation from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The committee is examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aims to reform waqf property management through digitization, stricter audits, and legal measures to reclaim illegally occupied properties.

On Monday, the meeting saw opposition members, including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, criticize the bill, alleging it targets the Muslim community. Despite the tensions, BJP members defended the bill as necessary for transparency and reform.
