Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced a financial incentive for farmers to discourage stubble burning, a practice contributing to poor air quality in the Delhi-NCR region. The government is offering Rs 1,000 per acre to farmers who refrain from burning stubble, with plans to increase this amount. Saini emphasized the importance of providing necessary equipment like reapers and balers to support farmers in managing stubble effectively.

During a meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Saini highlighted the state’s efforts in stubble management, which have been recognized by the Supreme Court. Despite these efforts, the Supreme Court criticized Haryana and Punjab for insufficient action against stubble burning, stressing the right to a clean environment. In response, Haryana Police have arrested 18 farmers in Kaithal district for stubble burning, with cases filed against 22 farmers.

The issue has sparked political tensions, with parties like the BJP and AAP blaming each other for inadequate pollution control measures. The air quality index recently reached a ‘very poor’ level, exceeding 300.
