What is Raahgiri Day?

Raahgiri is a weekly event where streets are closed to allow people to cycle, play, dance, perform yoga, and do aerobics. According to the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Raahgiri Day provides citizens with the opportunity to reclaim their streets, connect with their community, celebrate their city, and reclaim their lives.

The concept of Raahgiri Day is inspired by “Ciclovia,” held weekly in Bogota, Colombia, and now popular worldwide under different names like Open Streets and Summer Streets. During Raahgiri Day, streets are cordoned off for motorised transport, making them safe for citizens to cycle, walk, run, skate, play, and enjoy. Both children and adults are invited to participate in activities such as street games, street dancing, yoga, aerobics, and Zumba, fostering community spirit and healthy living.

Earlier in July, a Raahgiri Day programme was organised at Arjun Chowk in Haryana.
