Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Praises Vinesh Phogat Despite Olympic Disqualification
New Delhi [India], August 8: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that wrestler Vinesh Phogat will be honored like an Olympic medalist despite her disqualification from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event for breaching the weight mark.
Saini took to social media platform X to express his admiration for Phogat, stating, “Our brave daughter of Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, performed brilliantly and entered the finals of the Olympics. Due to some reasons, she may not have been able to play the final of the Olympics but she is a champion for all of us.”
He further added, “Our government has decided that Vinesh Phogat will be welcomed and felicitated like a medalist. All the respect, rewards and facilities that the Haryana government gives to the Olympic silver medalist will be gratefully given to Vinesh Phogat as well. We are proud of you Vinesh!”
Vinesh Phogat was scheduled to compete against the United States’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the gold medal match on August 7. She had reached the final after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.
India has so far won three bronze medals in shooting at the Paris Olympics and hopes for more in upcoming events. Avinash Sable will be participating in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase final on Thursday.
India had the chance to win more medals but finished fourth in several events including 10m air rifle, 25m pistol, skeet team, badminton singles, and mixed archery team events.
