Harvard University Puts Cosette Wu on Probation

Harvard University has placed Taiwanese-American student Cosette Wu on disciplinary probation for disrupting a speech by China’s US Ambassador, Xie Feng. The incident occurred during the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference on April 20. Wu protested against Beijing’s human rights abuses, leading to her removal by Chinese student Zou Hongji. Despite Wu’s apology, Harvard’s disciplinary board decided on probation from May 17-20 for breaching free speech rules.

Incident Details

Wu’s protest aimed to encourage critical thinking about the ambassador’s speech. She claimed her actions did not prevent the ambassador from speaking and was unaware of breaking university rules. Zou, who removed Wu, was not sanctioned but received an apology from Harvard. Zou was identified as a master’s candidate and an officer in the Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

Reactions and Consequences

Two other students, including Tsering Yangchen, also faced probation for protesting. Zou was notified of breaching physical violence policy but faced no sanctions due to online backlash. Harvard’s correspondence did not mention Zou’s actions being reported to the Massachusetts State Police as assault and battery.
