Harshitha Samarawickrama Joins Trinbago Knight Riders, Replacing Meg Lanning
Sri Lanka’s Harshitha Samarawickrama has replaced injured Australian star Meg Lanning at Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League 2024. The left-handed batter will join overseas players Shikha Pandey, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Jess Jonassen at TKR.
Samarawickrama is the second Sri Lankan woman cricketer to play in an overseas league after captain Chamari Athapaththu. She has been performing exceptionally well, including a sensational knock of 69*(51) in the Women’s Asia Cup final, helping Sri Lanka win their first Asia Cup title.
In a recent T20I series against Ireland, Samarawickrama scored back-to-back fifties and became the third Sri Lankan woman to score a century in an ODI. She has 1463 runs in 65 T20Is with a strike rate of 99.72.
Meg Lanning, who played for London Spirit in The Hundred, scored 170 runs in ten innings. Despite her form, London Spirit won the title.
Meanwhile, Chamari Athapaththu has committed to Sydney Thunder for the next three seasons in the Women’s Big Bash League. Last season, she scored 552 runs and took nine wickets, helping the Thunder finish fourth.
Athapaththu said, “Committing to Sydney Thunder for the next three seasons was an easy decision because I believe in the vision of this club, and I want to be part of its future success.”
