Harivansh Narayan Singh Highlights North East India’s Growth at CPA Conference in Mizoram
The Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh, attended the 21st Annual Conference of CPA India Region Zone in Aizawl, Mizoram. He spoke about the Union Government’s focus on infrastructure projects and economic incentives in the North Eastern region.
Economic Contributions and Infrastructure Developments
Singh noted that the North Eastern region contributes about 2.83% of India’s GDP and is expected to contribute more as new infrastructure projects are completed. He mentioned that Rs. 5 lakh crores have been spent by 54 Union Ministries since 2014, highlighting the region’s economic potential.
He also shared that eight new airports have been built since 2014, increasing the total to 17, which has boosted aviation traffic and tourism. Guwahati is emerging as a major aviation hub.
Railway and Road Developments
Singh highlighted significant railway achievements, including Nagaland’s second railway station after 100 years and the first Vande Bharat train from Guwahati. Aizawl will soon be connected by rail. Since 2014, 1012 kilometers of National Highway roads have been constructed, with another 1982 kilometers underway.
Government Efforts and Parliamentary Actions
Singh emphasized the frequent visits of Union Ministers to the region, including over 70 visits by the Prime Minister, which help in understanding local aspirations and implementing projects effectively. He also mentioned the proactive role of Parliament in examining opportunities in the North East.
Trade and Security Balance
One of the conference topics is the inclusion of the North East in the India-ASEAN vision for trade and cooperation. ASEAN is a key trading partner for India, with trade crossing $120 billion last year. Singh stressed the need for a balance between trade promotion and regional security, noting the Union Government’s efforts to achieve both goals incrementally and effectively.
